Foundational Works

We build legal technology.
Built on distrust of AI.

AI models hallucinate, fabricate, and contradict themselves. Our entire system is engineered around that distrust. Every stage is validated and tested. The result: high-quality knowledge bases you can actually rely on, and the high-quality deliverables built on top of them — each shipped with an audit trail, so you never have to take our word for it. It's the technology used by foundational.law, proven in live practice.

The market

Legal AI comes in two kinds.

Kind one

Faster traditional work

Most legal AI accelerates what humans already did: faster document review, faster drafting, faster research. Useful — but it trusts the model, ships one-shot output, and is limited to imitating the old medium.

New media always start this way. Radio broadcast vaudeville; early film pointed cameras at stage plays. Faster vaudeville is still vaudeville.

Kind two — what we build

Infrastructure for a new medium

Systems that enable fundamentally new work product: living knowledge bases that stay current, compliance guides that update as the law changes, multi-jurisdiction insight at speed, and queryable knowledge systems that compound value over time.

All of it built on one premise: the underlying models can't be trusted — so the infrastructure has to earn trust instead.

The distrust architecture

Verification isn't a step in our pipeline. It is the pipeline.

In legal work, a hallucinated citation or a fabricated summary isn't a rounding error — it's unacceptable. Most vendors optimize for speed and hope the output is right. We start from the opposite assumption and architect for it — end to end, with every stage validated, tested, and logged.

01

Multi-agent verification

Critical claims route through independent agents with different models, prompts, and retrieval paths. Agreement is a signal; disagreement triggers escalation.

02

Adversarial testing

Every analysis is tested the way opposing counsel would test it — counter-arguments, alternative readings, and the strongest case against our own conclusions. If a position can be broken, we break it first.

03

Cross-reference validation

Primary sources, secondary sources, and the knowledge base are cross-checked. Contradictions are flagged and resolved, not papered over.

04

Remediation loops

Automated systems flag issues for review; attorneys address flagged items. Every remediation step is logged.

05

Transparent audit trail

Every deliverable ships with logs documenting each verification layer, model consulted, flag raised, remediation applied — and every unverified tag. What we don't know is labeled, not hidden. You don't have to trust us — the trail shows the work.

06

Attorney direction

Licensed attorneys direct the engagement and apply judgment to escalated items and key deliverables. The system's job is to surface what needs a lawyer's attention.

The output isn't trustworthy because a model produced it. It's trustworthy because the architecture assumed the model was wrong and made it prove otherwise.

The technology

One end-to-end system — from verified knowledge base to finished deliverable.

The KB-first thesis

The bottleneck in legal AI isn't the language model — it's the quality of the knowledge the model works from. So we invest where it counts: structured, verified, living knowledge bases with cross-source validation, contradiction detection, and reliability scoring built in at ingestion. Get the KB right and a whole family of deliverables becomes possible. Get it wrong and nothing downstream can be trusted.

System 01

KB Creator Engine

Ingests source material, structures it, configures update cadences, and maintains versions — creating living knowledge bases that stay current instead of one-shot snapshots that age. Changes propagate automatically to every dependent deliverable.

Distrust layer: cross-source validation · contradiction flagging · source reliability scoring · audit logs at ingestion

System 02

Virtual Local Insight

Assembles jurisdiction- and domain-specific knowledge to deliver local insight at scale: both an accurate baseline and a jurisdiction-specific read — the local considerations worth flagging, and where engaging local counsel is actually worth it.

Distrust layer: adversarial review of jurisdiction-specific conclusions · cross-jurisdiction consistency checks · local source scoring

System 03

Voice & Style System

Renders the same verified knowledge for different audiences — executive brief, engineering punchlist, counsel memo — so work product lands correctly for each reader. One KB, many deliverables.

Distrust layer: verification metadata, remediation flags, and unverified tags travel with every output format

System 04

Drafting System

Produces first-pass and iterative drafts — memos, analyses, contract language, advisories — grounded in KB context with provenance tracking, so attorneys spend their time on judgment instead of mechanical drafting.

Distrust layer: multi-agent verification, adversarial review, and remediation loops in every generation cycle

What it produces

One verified knowledge base. A family of deliverables.

Living compliance guides

Multi-jurisdiction posture maps that update as the law changes — not snapshots that age on delivery.

Governance corpora

Frameworks, policy templates, and case studies maintained as regulations evolve.

Jurisdiction reads

Local insight across markets: the baseline answer plus what counsel on the ground would flag.

Audience-specific renderings

The same analysis shaped for the board, the engineers, or the legal team — verification trail intact.

Queryable advisory systems

Teams ask questions 24/7 and get answers grounded in the maintained, verified KB.

Draft work product

Research memos, analyses, and contract language with provenance for every claim.

Architecture & philosophy

Built for composability.

Principle 01

Third-party-first

We don't build the LLM. We use best-in-class models from multiple providers — and you benefit from model improvements immediately.

Principle 02

Composable & markdown-native

Knowledge stores, templates, and workflows are human-readable markdown, not proprietary database schemas. Switch a tool; the architecture remains. Everything version-controlled and auditable.

Principle 03

Privacy-first

Zero-data-retention providers only for confidential work. No client data in model training. Privilege boundaries enforced at the infrastructure level, not just tagged.

Proof, not promises

Validated in live legal practice.

Foundational Works builds the technology used by foundational.law — real client matters, real deadlines, professional standard of care. Nothing ships to customers before it has survived live practice.

The Solstice Interactive sample engagement on foundational.law — three case studies built on a shared knowledge base — is output produced by this system, published in full. Nothing held back, nothing staged.

  • Dramatically faster turnaround than traditional approaches on research-heavy work
  • Multi-proceeding patent analysis in hours of combined attorney + system time, not weeks
  • Multi-jurisdiction reviews in days, on questions that traditionally take months
  • Living deliverables maintained on a regular cadence instead of one-shot memos
